BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhua) — Congratulations have been pouring in from around the world since Xi Jinping was elected Chinese president by a unanimous vote on March 17 at the annual session of the National People’s Congress, China’s national legislature.

Xi was also unanimously elected chairman of the Central Military Commission.

In their congratulatory messages, leaders of foreign countries, political parties and organizations expressed confidence that under Xi’s leadership, China will achieve greater prosperity and make more contributions to world peace and development.

The following is an edited version of some of the messages.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis congratulated Xi on being elected as Chinese president, saying that he is willing to work with Xi to promote the development of the comprehensive Romania-China partnership.

King Felipe VI of Spain wished Xi would make great achievements while fulfilling his sublime mission as Chinese president and wished the Chinese people prosperity, progress, happiness and well-being in the future.

British Prime Minister Theresa May congratulated Xi on being elected as Chinese president, wishing him and the Chinese people greater success.

The “Golden Era” of Britain-China relations has brought tangible benefits to both countries, said May, adding that she hopes the global comprehensive and strategic partnership between the two countries can be further strengthened.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo said Xi’s leadership and experience will contribute greatly to China’s lasting prosperity and he is willing to work with Xi to promote the Indonesia-China comprehensive strategic partnership further.

President of Timor-Leste Francisco Guterres, also known as Lu-Olo, congratulated Xi on being elected as Chinese president, saying he believes the partnership between the two countries will be further consolidated.

Angolan President Joao Lourenco said Xi’s election as Chinese president by a unanimous vote fully demonstrated the Chinese people’s support for and recognition of Xi’s high prestige and outstanding talent.

Lourenco said he believes that Xi will lead the Chinese people to further promote the country’s development.

Cote d’Ivoire’s President Alassane Ouattara extended the most sincere and warmest congratulations to Xi on his election as Chinese president. He hoped Xi would achieve success as president, and wished the friendly Chinese people happiness and health.

Zambian President Edgar Lungu said Xi’s election as Chinese president fully embodied the Chinese people’s determination and desire to realize the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Lungu said that under Xi’s leadership, China will transform itself into a modern socialist country that is harmonious and prosperous.

Malawian President Peter Mutharika warmly congratulated Xi on his election as Chinese president by a unanimous vote, adding that Xi’s election fully showed Chinese people’s trust and confidence in Xi’s leadership of the Communist Party of China and the country.

Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord of Libya Fayez al-Serraj congratulated Xi on being unanimously elected to his second term as Chinese president.

He said Xi’s election will promote the friendly relationship between Libya and China and help the bilateral ties develop further so as to benefit the two peoples.

President of Guyana David Arthur Granger said that he wished that under Xi’s leadership, China will prosper and become stronger and that the friendly cooperative relations between Guyana and China will further develop.

President of the Federated States of Micronesia Peter M. Christian said Xi’s election by a unanimous vote is the best testament to Xi’s wisdom, insight, and leadership as the leader of a major country.

The various policies and measures taken by Xi have boosted the Chinese people’s trust in the government and won the wide respect and support of the international community, he said.

President of Benin Patrice Talon, President of Cape Verde Jorge Carlos Fonseca, President of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis, Prime Minister of the Bahamas Hubert Minnis and Premier of Niue Toke Talagi are also among those who sent their congratulatory messages to Xi.
